Nissan Quest Shift Cable

The link that allows the driver to move the console selector so that the transmission can select the correct gear is provided by the Nissan Quest Shift Cable. This Shift Cable uses a steel core inside a protective sheath to translate the driver 's hand motion into movement of the transmission manual lever. In the minivan, this delivers accurate park to drive changes, but in a smooth motion without bulky metal rods. Some of the older Quest models followed industry trends and applied a rigid linkage design, but the recent Nissan update has switched to a smoother self-lubricating cable design that resists road dirt and vibration. This single strand style can stretch or break with overuse, so regular inspection can prevent a sloppy shifter feel or inability to leave park. The third generation Quest had Shift Cable routing shortened to reduce friction. More recent generations retained the mechanical Shift Cable for reliability while pairing it with electronic shift interlock switches that freeze the lever until the brake is pressed, adding safety along with not deleting a proven system. The main distinctions between different production years mainly involve attachment clips and bracket locations. Nonetheless, every Nissan van still relies on a correctly adjusted Shift Cable to ensure accurate and easy gear selection.

Nissan Quest Shift Cable Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the shift cable on Nissan Quest?
    A:
To do this, release the coolant reservoir first. Subsequently, in the driver's compartment, remove the mounting nuts and bolts of the parking brake pedal assembly which is situated under the dash and set it aside. Now unbolt the shift cable grommet at the firewall by using nut-bolt duo before detaching the cable and the bracket from the firewall. Release the steering column covers, or unlock the steering column; undo the steering column to body mounting bolts; and finally lower the steering column. Inside the dashboard above the steering column, very gingerly, remove the shift cable end from the selector shaft. Pull the shift cable to remove it from the bracket and at the same time tighten the lock tabs. Lift the car up on safety stands, remove the undervehicle splash shield of the side of interest, then loosen the nut which connects shift cable to the end and detach the shift cable from the transaxle shift lever. To detach the shift cable, perhaps by loosening it from the locking pin where it connects with the bracket, one has to use a small screwdriver. During the installation, the shift cable has to be threaded through the opening provided in the firewall part, pass through the cable area of the driver's compartment, and then the finished part of the cable must be connected to the selector lever. In the transaxle area, position the shift cable onto the transaxle shift lever that will also fix to the bracket. Replace the coolant reservoir, and slide the shift cable grommet over the sus-tained studs on the firewall, then tightened the nuts to the required spec. To do this, perform shift lever through all the gears to ensure that all the gears are well positioned. For adjustment, safely lift the vehicle on jackstands, then, disconnect the splah protect plate beneath the engine and the inner left side of the splash shield. Pull the shift selector lever to the PARK position and set the shift indicator cable in the correct position. Remove the cotter pin and nut from the range sensor lock nut of the linkage arm then rotate the shift cable upwards to take the slack; afterwards, tighten the lock nut to the recommended torque. Last, with the engine off, operate the shift lever through all the gears, then start the engine and, with the shift lever in each gear, turn on the starter.
