About Nissan Timing Chain
Instead of a high tensile rubber and fiber timing belt, older vehicles use it to maintain proper synchronization between the camshafts and crankshafts. Nissan timing chains were very durable, but could break if a vehicle was regularly used for breaking or suffered complete engine failure. On newer vehicles with timing chains, lack of proper lubrication or faulty tensioners in the engine can also cause issues.

- Q: How to properly remove and install the timing chain and associated components during an engine timing system service on Nissan Frontier?A:Before you do this, you should ensure that the engine is completely cool. Only experienced persons should attempt removing components for timing system work as mistakes can result in severe damage to the engine. For this reason, it is recommended that you either confirm your competence or when in doubt seek assistance from professionals before starting this process. First, relieve fuel pressure and remove battery cables. Remove the engine cover, drive belts, idler pulley brackets and spark plugs. Position number one piston at TDC on the compression stroke while removing both drive belts, idler pulley brackets and all spark plugs. Raise the front of vehicle and place it on jackstands; also drain cooling system and engine oil from there. Proceed to take off hoses as necessary marking them, taking out crankshaft sensor crankshaft pulley air conditioning compressor air conditioning compressor bracket upper and lower oil pans upper and lower intake manifold plenums valve covers cooling fan radiator power steering pump fan pulley bracket power steering pump bracket alternator water bypass pipe etc. Take out camshaft and variable valve timing (VVT) sensors from front timing chain cover with VVT actuator covers loosening cover bolts. Disconnect wiring harnesses from top front timing chain cover brackets, ensuring that number one piston remains at TDC on compression stroke when removing front timing chain cover.Remove primary timing chain tension by stretching it; then detach primary tensioner primary tensioner pivot arm/chain guide upper timing chain guides.Carefully secure secondary timing chain tensioners prior to removal of camshafts sprocket bolts then disengage primary timing chains from respective sprockets.Draw marks around camshaft sprockets being careful not to damage sensor ring then remove them along with secondary timings chains.Remove crankshaft sprocket as well as lower timing chain guide and inspect all components for wear.Verify the correct counting links, comparing new versus old chains.If any secondary tensioners were removed they should be reinstalled with the dowels on camshafts pointing upwards.At this point install secondary timing chains and sprockets with timing marks aligned- unlock secondary chain tensioners, remove stopper pins.Installation of primary timing chain should be done on primary camshaft sprockets, crankshaft sprocket as well as water pump sprocket with colored chain links being matched with respective sprocket marks. Upper timing chain guides should also be installed at this moment.Timing chain tensioner and assembly of primary tensioner arm/chain guide should be installed, ensuring that number one piston remains at TDC while timing marks aligning.Finally tighten camshaft sprocket bolts clean and seal front timing chain cover and install cover bolts using proper sequence.Place new O-rings in WT orifices then apply sealant to variable valve timing actuator covers, installing them over dowels on front timing chain cover.The wiring harness and bolts for the front timing chain cover can now be reattached.Power steering pump bracket; Fan pulley bracket may also need to be mounted if they were detached.The reverse removal procedure should be followed during installation; then adhere to sealant manufacturer recommendations, allow it to cure, replace oil filter, refill oil and coolant then start engine checking for leaks. Note that when air pressure in high pressure chamber of primary timing chain tensioner is released there is a possibility that you will hear some level of noise from the driving chains but this will diminish with time.
