The air filter is enclosed in the air filter housing which is located to the left (Driver) side of the vehicle as perceived from the front end of the vehicle. And then depending on the model and year of the car for all the 2011 and earlier car models, press the tabs on the side of the top cover and pull it off and make sure that the tabs are clear from the side catches on the housing. For the year 2012 and other subsequent models, open the housing by first retracting the spring clips that connect the two halves of the housing. Remove the filter from the housing and examine the outer part of the filter; if the filter is found dirty you replace it but if it is moderately dusty, you clean it by blowing compressed air beginning from the back side of the filter towards the frontal side. Due to its typology of a pleated paper type filter it can neither be washed nor oiled and where is cannot be cleaned to an acceptable standard it has to be replaced. Implying, do not drop anything into the housing while the cover is off and needs to be replaced. One must always make sure that the air filter is not removed when operating the vehicle since unwanted friction occurs to the engine besides emanating thick black smoke and fire risks. Clean the interior of the housing, and insert the new filter into it and make sure that it fits well. For the years up to 2011, position the end cover on the housing to suit the tabs that locks the sides of the housing and push the cover further until it is correctly situated. On models manufactured after 2012, replace the two halves of the housing and secure the metallic clips on the slots.
