Nissan Xterra Intermediate Shaft

The Nissan Xterra Intermediate Shaft connects the steering wheel to the steering gearbox, allowing the driver direct control. The Intermediate Shaft quickly transmits motion between the parts, so the front wheels react promptly. A strong coupler and splined end secure it tightly while a universal joint allows shift in angle of column as frame flexes. The driver's sense of steering is protected throughout the Xterra range with a secure but flexible build that minimizes play, vibration, and steering wander. The Intermediate Shaft uses corrosion resistant materials and tight tolerances. Since steering is a primary safety system, it stays reliable on or off road. The design of the first and second generations was the same, so no need to deal with different lengths or mountings. By following the course of the Intermediate Shaft, it can easily detect clunks or stiffness early on. Any looseness in this tiny connecting link will affect the overall steering feel of the Nissan SUV. Leaving the Intermediate Shaft maintains the crisp handling associated with a well maintained Nissan Xterra.

Nissan Xterra Intermediate Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the intermediate shaft on Nissan Xterra?
    A:
Turn your wheels to face forward when parking the car. Turn on the power by disconnecting the cable from the pump terminals - negative then positive. Disable the airbag system. Before starting the engine, turn the key to LOCK position to stop the steering shaft from turning. The steering shaft might get damaged if you turn it while leaving the airbag clockspring disconnected. At the front of the car, draw the location of the steering gear's input shaft compared to the intermediate shaft, and unscrew the joining bolt. Make note of how the intermediate shaft sits in relation to the steering column, then take out the pinch bolt. Pull the intermediate shaft upward away from the steering gear input shaft, and take it off. Then lift the shaft down off the gear's input shaft. When putting back the parts, line up the matchmarks and slow tighten the coupler bolts to the recommended torque force. When the intermediate shaft has a cutout near the top, it must be oriented towards the pinch bolt.
