Nissan Xterra Steering Knuckle

The Nissan Xterra Steering Knuckle enables the front wheels to smoothly pivot while maintaining a solid connection to the suspension and steering components. Fixed between upper and lower control arms or struts and lower arms, the Steering Knuckle carries the tie-rod end and the hub or spindle and serves as the anchor that keeps the tire rotating in a stable plane as the vehicle is bumped over holes or bumps and swings horizontally when the driver turns the wheel. Each Nissan Xterra uses a robust Steering Knuckle. Early utility versions of the spindle have an RWD layout where it forms one piece with the Steering Knuckle and tapered roller bearings support a bolt-on hub. However, many four-wheel-drive trims use a style where the drive axle passes through the knuckle to a hub pressed or bolted inside, so power is transmitted as the assembly steers. Some 4WD models use a hollow spindle that bolts onto the knuckle and lets the axle slide through. The hub spins outside. Despite their long wear life, if a collision has damaged either the ball joint or tie-rod bores on a Steering Knuckle, or if bearing failure has marked the spindle surface, replacement is necessary. This repair ensures the Nissan handling remains predictable and satisfies the performance demands of off-roaders and Xterra faithful.

Nissan Xterra Steering Knuckle Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a steering knuckle on Nissan Xterra?
    A:
Before you take off the wheel, loosen the lug nuts, lift up the vehicle, and make sure it's held firmly in place by jackstands put right under the frame or subframe rails. For 4WD models, remove the driveaxle. To keep the lower Control Arm stable, lift your vehicle with a floor jack and raise the jack just a little. Hang the brake caliper out of the way without disconnecting the brake hose using wire, and take off both the brake caliper and brake disc. Carefully take off the splash shield that covers the disc from the steering knuckle and disconnect the steering knuckle from the tie-rod end. First, disconnect the balljoints from the steering knuckle for Frontier and Xterra models, then take off the steering knuckle. To put everything back together, you must first tighten each balljoint, strut, and tie-rod end to its right torque number. To match the ballstud slots with the nut hole, you can turn the nut slightly tighter - just enough for the cotter pin to go in. Then insert a fresh cotter pin. Last, hand-tighten these four essential bolts: caliper mounting and hub locking bolts, as well as wheel mounting nuts. Install them to the numbers shown on the maintenance instructions.
