a) Keep the back sides of the bearing inserts and the insides of the connecting rods and caps perfectly clean. b) Ensure the correct piston/rod assembly for each cylinder. c) The "W" mark on the piston and rod must face the drivebelt end of the engine. d) Lubricate the cylinder walls with clean oil. e) Lubricate the bearing faces when installing the rod caps after checking oil clearance.

Loosen each of the connecting rod cap nuts 1/2-turn at a time until they can be removed by hand. Remove the number one connecting rod cap and bearing insert, being careful not to drop the bearing insert out of the cap.

Piston ring side clearance is measured by laying a new piston ring in each ring groove and using a feeler gauge beside it. The clearance should be checked at three or four locations around each groove, ensuring the correct ring is used for each groove.
