First, lower the fuel pressure. Then detach the battery cable's negative end, and pull fuel from the tank to a safe container before taking out the tank from your vehicle. To access the fuel pump and sending unit on Pathfinders, strip back your backseat, access cover, electric connections, then disconnect and untether the fuel supply and return lines. Raise the car, then put it on jackstands to stand securely. Before taking out the fuel tank, take off its protective tube and cover using the bolts at both front and back of the tank. Separate the tank from the vehicle by removing the fuel tank opening hose, vapor hose, fuel lines, and eggshell shaped tube. Put a jack under the bottom of the tank with a flat wood plank between the jack foot and tank, lift the jack to support the tank. Place the jack under the vehicle and remove the mounting bolts on the fuel tank. Lower the jack very slowly as you guide the fuel tank carefully from under the car. Before you replace or have someone repair/clean your tank, make sure you handle the process correctly. When taking out and putting back the fuel pump/sending unit, do extra actions. You can attach the fuel filler hose back to the fuel tank after installation by sliding it on easily with clean engine oil acting as a lubricant.
