The removal process for the 1.2 litre petrol engines involves locating the thermostat in a housing bolted to the front facing side of the cylinder block, draining the cooling system, removing the inlet manifold, disconnecting the cooling system hoses from the thermostat housing, disconnecting the housing wiring connector if applicable, removing the thermostat housing from the cylinder block, and recovering the sealing ring. In the case of diesel engines, the thermostat is located in a housing bolted to the left-hand side of the cylinder head, and the removal process involves removing the air cleaner assembly and vacuum pump, draining the cooling system, disconnecting the wiring connector from the temperature sensor in the coolant housing, disconnecting the cooling system hoses from the coolant housing, removing the coolant housing from the cylinder head, and lifting the thermostat, O-ring, and seal from the housing. Testing the thermostat involves suspending it in a container of boiling water to check if it opens, and if a thermometer is available, determining the precise opening temperature. A thermostat that fails to close as the water cools down should be replaced. When refitting, it is important to renew all disturbed O-rings, seals, and gaskets, and on 1.6 litre petrol engines, the thermostat should be fitted with the small jiggle pin uppermost. Finally, the cooling system should be refilled.
