    Q:
Are adjustments available for the shift cables on Nissan Versa? Posted by Customer
    A:
Adjustments are not available for the shift cables. If the vehicle does not shift properly, check for bent brackets and verify the cables are correctly installed in the brackets and on the levers. Begin by raising the vehicle and supporting it securely on jackstands. For 2011 and earlier models, the shifter assembly and cables are one unit and cannot be replaced separately. Remove the battery, then take out the air filter housing and ducts for access to the top of the transaxle. Detach the cables from the shift lever on the transaxle, move the stopper on the side of the select cable connection forward, push in on the release button next to the stopper, and remove the cable from the select lever. Place the shifter in Neutral, then remove the center console and the four shifter assembly mounting bolts. Raise the vehicle again and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the exhaust system and heat shield from under the center of the vehicle to allow access to the shift cables. Remove the cable support bracket and the shift and select cables from the bracket, then remove the shifter and shift cables as an assembly from under the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal, ensuring to move the stopper into the locked position after connecting the select cable to the lever. For 2012 and later models, place the shifter in Neutral, remove the battery and battery tray, then detach the shift and select cables from the shift levers and brackets. Press the sides of the cable locks together to remove the shift and select cables from the bracket on the transaxle, then remove the center console. Pry off the shift and select cables from the shifter assembly, press the sides of the cable locks together again to remove the cables from the bracket on the shifter assembly, and then remove the four shifter assembly mounting bolts to take out the shifter assembly. Remove the exhaust system and heat shield from under the center of the vehicle to allow access to the shift cables, then remove the cable support bracket and the shift and select cables from the bracket, followed by removing the grommet retainer and pulling the cables from the vehicle. Installation is the reverse of removal.

    Q:
What procedures apply to Nissan Versa for shift cable replacement? Posted by Customer
    A:
The above procedures apply to the models with 4-speed AT and CVT transaxles. For removal and install applications on 2012 and prior models, first engage the parking brake and shift the gear shift to Park then you can disconnect the battery and also take off the air intake housing with ducts to get to the front of the transaxle. Loosen the shift cable from the manual lever by unscrewing the locknut: Raise the car on safety jack stands. Pull out the exhaust and heat shield to reach the shift cable, and then unscrew the black cover plate to free up the shifter cable from the pivot and bracket. Pull out the shift cable; release the cable support bracket. The removal process is done in the opposite way of installation, after which cables are adjusted. To perform diagnostics on 2012 and later models, start by disconnecting the battery and battery tray and then the module for the transmission, followed by the power distribution center bracket. Disconnect the end of the cable from the shifter assembly and also, make a removal of the center console as well as the bracket that is on top of the cable grommet. Push the locking tabs to release the grommet and then unbolt the nut fixing the shift cable to the lever on the transaxle side, with the nuts that retain the cable to the bracket, the clip must be removed. Lift the vehicle up on jackstands and if necessary, take off the exhaust as well as the heat shield to gain access. Take out all the screws which hold the shift cable bracket and, with the help of the shift lever, draw the cable through the floor to get rid of it. The process of installation is the opposite to that of removal and is succeeded by the process of cable adjustment. For adjustment, first, the Air Filter Housing has to be removed, then shift lever should be placed in position, locknut then loosened, and the transaxle manual shift lever has to be engaged in Park position. Tighten the locknut while holding the manual lever; shift from "P" to "R or 1" the shift lever should move smoothly and the shift indicator should indicate the corresponding position. Last but not the least, make sure that the engine can be started.
