The function of the Exhaust Manifold is to collect the exhaust gas from the engine's cylinder head and channel it into a single outlet which feeds into the rest of the exhaust system. It bolts to the exhaust pipe and to the cylinder head, and gaskets seal both joints to prevent leaks. The majority of the construction is cast iron, although some have steel or stainless steel tubing welded onto a flange, and the units have heat shields limiting the heat transfer to the cabin floor. Each cylinder branch sends its gas to the Exhaust Manifold to prevent backflow of intake gases and direct them toward the catalytic converter, muffler, and tailpipe. Proper sealing keeps the 300ZX cabin free of fumes. - Q: How to relieve fuel pressure and remove the exhaust manifold on Nissan 300ZX?A:Relieve the fuel pressure and disconnect the negative cable at the battery, placing it out of the way to prevent accidental contact with the negative terminal. Remove the intake collector and throttle chamber assembly, then cover the intake ports with a shop rag to avoid debris entering the engine. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the bolts securing the crossover heat shield to the crossover pipe, followed by the crossover connecting pipe bolts from the left side and the two upper crossover pipe bolts from the right side. From underneath, remove the lower bolt from the right side of the crossover connecting pipe. On the right side, remove the heat shield bolts securing the two heat shield halves to the right exhaust manifold, then remove the exhaust manifold retaining bolts in numerical order. If equipped with cruise control, disconnect both cruise control bracket bolts and set the unit aside to facilitate exhaust manifold removal. Lift the rear of the exhaust manifold and then remove it from the engine compartment. For turbo-equipped models, the head and exhaust manifold must be removed as an assembly. Remove the heat shield bolts securing the heat shield to the left exhaust manifold, followed by the bolts securing the exhaust manifold to the exhaust pipe. Remove the exhaust manifold bolts from above and below in the proper sequence, noting that if only replacing the left side exhaust manifold gasket on normally aspirated models, removal of the manifold is not necessary. If the manifold is being removed for other service, take out the top two air compressor retaining bolts and the intake air tube to allow for lifting the manifold from the engine compartment. Before installing either manifold, clean all gasket mating surfaces, then install a new gasket onto the studs retaining the manifold to the head without the need for sealant. Install the manifold and tighten the nuts in the proper sequence to the specified torque, with the installation of the remaining components following the reverse order of removal.
