Release the fuel pressure, then disconnect the negative cable at the battery and place it out of the way to prevent accidental contact with the negative terminal. Drain the cooling system, remove the throttle chamber intake air pipe, and take off the intake collector with the throttle chamber attached. Remove the spark plug wires and distributor cap, ensuring to mark the spark plug wires for proper re-installation. Next, remove the injector assembly and the air conditioning compressor drivebelt. Take out the bolts securing the air conditioning idler pulley bracket and remove the bracket. Loosen the bypass hose clamp and pry the hose from the thermostat housing, then remove the bolt securing the timing belt cover to the thermostat housing. Detach the upper radiator hose from the inlet pipe, disconnect the vacuum hose on top of the fuel pressure regulator, and loosen the screw securing the fuel return hose to the fuel regulator before prying off the hose. Disconnect the metal heater hose flange from the back of the manifold, then loosen the eight intake manifold securing bolts in numerical order and lift straight up on the intake manifold. Clean all old gasket material and sealant from the mounting surfaces with a gasket scraper, taking care not to scratch them. Install a new intake gasket without sealant, and the installation of the intake manifold follows the reverse order of removal.
