With the engine mounted on an engine stand, drain the oil and rotate the engine until the oil pan is facing upward, then remove all the oil pan retaining bolts. It may be necessary to pry the pan from the block with a screwdriver, taking care not to damage the gasket mounting surface or bend the oil pan. Use a small scraper to remove any sealant or gasket material from both gasket mounting surfaces of the oil pan flange and the engine block, and thoroughly clean the oil pan in solvent. Apply a small amount of RTV sealant to the four corners of the engine block gasket mating surface, and also apply sealant to the upper and lower surfaces of the oil pan gasket at the same four corners. For 1988 and later models, no oil pan gasket is used; instead, a continuous bead of sealant 5/32-inch wide should be applied to the oil pan flange to form a seal, specifically on the inside of the bolt holes. The installation of the oil pan follows the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring that the oil pan flange bolts are tightened to the specified torque in numerical order.
