The steering column consists of the electric power steering (EPS) motor, the electronic control unit, and the steering column itself, forming a single assembly that cannot be separated. To remove it, first disconnect the battery negative terminal, then take off the
Steering Wheel and the steering column switches, followed by the airbag rotary connector and the wiring connectors from the
Ignition Switch. For better access, remove the driver's side lower facia panel and release the two fasteners to take out the carpet segment around the base of the steering column. Mark the steering column intermediate shaft universal joint and the steering gear pinion shaft, then undo the retaining bolt to disconnect the universal joint, ensuring not to turn the steering wheel during this process. Free the wiring loom from the retaining clips along the column, noting its fitted position, and position it clear for removal. Due to the weight of the steering column/motor assembly, assistance or support in the footwell is necessary during removal. Slacken and remove the four mounting nuts from the top of the column, carefully lower the assembly while disconnecting the wiring connectors from the top of the motor, and withdraw it from the vehicle once free. For refitting, reverse the removal steps, ensuring all fastenings are tightened to the specified torque settings, and reattach the airbag rotary connector, steering column switches, steering wheel, and the steering column shrouds along with the lower facia panel.
