Nissan Maxima Wheel Cylinder

The Nissan Maxima Wheel Cylinder presses the drum brake shoes against the drum, using hydraulic fluid to create outward piston movement. The Wheel Cylinder body is made up of cast iron or aluminum metal. It is mounted on the backing plate. The Wheel Cylinder has a central bore. This bore has two pistons inside it. Furthermore, there are cup seals, an expander spring, and dust boots inside the bore. Dust boots are placed at the end of the bore. In the Nissan Maxima, brake fluid enters between each Wheel Cylinder piston when the brake pedal is applied. This creates rising pressure which allows each piston to push outward and directly against the shoes or linked levers. This creates friction that slows down the vehicle. As the pressure increases, the cup seal lips will spread to prevent leaks. The expander spring will hold the seals in place when the brakes are released. The return springs will draw the pistons back into the Wheel Cylinder. A bleeder screw located at the high point permits air to escape. Moisture in glycol brake fluid can corrode the bore and create leaks. It can also cause low pedal feel, dragging, or seized pistons which result in diminished Nissan Maxima brake performance until the Wheel Cylinder is rebuilt or replaced on the affected Nissan Maxima drum assembly.

Nissan Maxima Wheel Cylinder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a wheel cylinder on Nissan Maxima?
    A:
To remove the wheel cylinder, first raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Next, remove the brake shoe assembly and clean all dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Disconnect the Brake Line using a flare-nut wrench if available, ensuring not to pull the line away from the cylinder. Then, remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolts and detach the cylinder from the brake backing plate, placing it on a clean workbench while immediately plugging the brake line to prevent fluid loss and contamination. For installation, position the new wheel cylinder and install the bolts finger tight, connecting the brake line carefully to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the wheel cylinder bolts to the specified torque, secure the brake line, and install the brake shoes. Finally, bleed the brakes and check their operation carefully before driving the vehicle.
