Nissan Xterra Rack And Pinion Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the Rack and Pinion steering gear on the Nissan Xterra?
    A:
When a car has power steering, put a drain pan under the Rack And Pinion mechanism. First, open the car's hood and take off the power steering connections running to the steering gear. Use a flare-nut wrench if you have one because it prevents making the circular hollow fitting corners uneven. Cover both lines to keep fluid from leaking out and staying clean. Before you take out the pin connecting the intermediate shaft to the steering gear, show which way the shaft is facing compared to the gear input shaft. Take off the left front tire's lugs, lift up the car's front end, and safely prop it on two jack stands. Apply the parking brake and remove the wheel. Remove the inner fender splash shield. Separate the relay rod from the Pitman arm. Free up the steering gear mounting bolts and nuts from the frame rail, then take the steering gear off the frame. Before you put on the fresh steering gear, separate the Pitman arm from the sector shaft on the steering gear. Merely follow the removal steps backwards, tightening everything securely while making sure wheel lug nuts reach proper torque. Look at the power steering fluid and top up the low tank, then release trapped air bubbles from the system.
