The turbocharger, on the left exhaust manifold, compresses intake air from the air cleaner using two turbines. One turbine is turned by exhaust gases, which then turns the second turbine that compresses the intake air. An exhaust gas bypass valve prevents excessive supercharging pressure, opening at a set pressure to let exhaust gases bypass the turbocharger. An emergency relief valve is also included in the intake collector to relieve pressure. The turbocharger's emergency relief valve is attached to the intake collector. In 1985, water jackets were added to the turbocharger due to turbine bearing failures from extreme heat.

The turbocharger's high rotation speed relies on a constant flow of engine oil for lubrication and cooling. Therefore, it's essential to pay careful attention to the condition of the oil lines and the tightness of their fittings. It's also important not to overtighten the hollow bolts to prevent deformation of the unions and oil leakage.

Inspect the turbine and compressor wheel for cracks, clogging, deformity, or other damage. Spin the wheels and check for free movement and abnormal noise or friction.

The front exhaust tube from the turbo and the steering column lower joint should be removed.
