In the case of the Type 1 engines, the air filter is in the air cleaner housing usually situated on the left rear of the engine compartment. To get to it, slide a screwdriver under two retaining tabs on each end of the covering and push up to remove the covering. Third, pull the air filter holder out from the housing, after that remove the air filter out from the holder while noting the position of the air filter. Wipe the interior part of the air filter housing and cover using a cloth in order to reduce accumulation of dirt and debris. Place the new air filter in the holder before replacing the holder in the housing, and firmly sliding the holder to the back of the car. Last, secure back the air cleaner cover to its housing. For type 2 engines, the air filter is again in this air cleaner housing on the left hand rear of the engine compartment. To start with remove this tab, and this releases the upper inlet air duct from the air cleaner housing, and pulling up on this duct gets rid of the lower mounting peg from the grommet and the entire unit from the compartment. Insert the tips of the two retaining clips to push the releasing buttons and unlock the air cleaner housing from the air cleaner case while lifting out the old air filter in the same position. Vacuum both the air cleaner housing and case to remove dirt and debris and wipe the inside of both with a cloth. The new air filter is then fitted to the housing and the housing reconnected before being locked into position by two retaining clips and the upper air inlet duct refitted.
