After installation, check the connecting rod bearing oil clearance by cutting a piece of Plastigage and laying it on the number one connecting rod journal.

Scrape all traces of carbon from the crown of the piston using a hand-held wire brush or fine emery cloth after the majority of deposits have been removed. Avoid using a wire brush mounted in a drill motor, as it can erode the soft piston material.

It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions because failure to remove the ridge can result in broken piston rings when attempting to remove the piston and connecting rod assemblies.

Check the connecting rods and caps for identification marks. If they are not plainly marked, use a small center punch to make the appropriate number of indentations on each rod and cap (1, 2, 3, etc.).

a) Keep the back sides of the bearing inserts and the insides of the connecting rods and caps perfectly clean. b) Ensure the correct piston/rod assembly for each cylinder. c) The "W" mark on the piston and rod must face the drivebelt end of the engine. d) Lubricate the cylinder walls with clean oil. e) Lubricate the bearing faces when installing the rod caps after checking oil clearance.
