When buying a new alternator, make sure to bring the old one with you. Check carefully that the new or rebuilt unit matches the old one completely, with the same number of terminals of equal size and positioning. Also ensure there are exactly the same identification numbers on both units. Since new and rebuilt alternators often don't come with pulleys, you may need to move the old pulley over to the new alternator. Check with the shop to see if they'll switch the pulley for you free of charge. Begin with the basics - unplug the battery cable from its negative side. Lift up the front of the vehicle, then put large jackstands underneath to hold it in place. Start bylifting off the engine cover, then take away the radiator fan assembly if you have a 350Z. Unhook the power steering pump/fan drivebelt from the alternator, and disconnect the electric cable. Push the release tab on the alternator's connector first, then pull up on the connector to complete removal. Undo the oil pressure switch wiring connection, open the bracket clip on the lower alternator mount, and take off the wire adapter by tapping the release tab. Unclip the battery cable harness from the alternator battery terminal, unscrew the nut holding the battery cable to the terminal, and pull off the cable from the B terminal. First remove the upper alternator attaching screw. Next, take out both the lower alternator bolts and the mounting bracket nut. Finally, remove the bracket and alternator. Installation is the reverse of removal.
