To remove the starter motor on 1.2 litre petrol engines starter motor, first, pull the battery negative terminal, then, remove the cooling system expansion tank bolts and shift the tank out of the way. I bleed the cooling system and then unbolt the inlet manifold and remove the retaining clips to get the radiator bottom hose disconnected from the thermostat housing. Stack the wiring loom and hoses out of the way to reveal that the starter motor is mounted on the front of the cylinder block, to the bell housing of the transmission. Draw the rubber hood back, loosen or unscrew the two nuts holding the starter with your hand, and then, unclasp the major battery connection as well as the small solenoid wiring from the starter solenoid. Loosen the starter motor mounting bolts while propping up the motor, then swing it out of the way. For 1.6 litre petrol engines, perform mostly the same initial repairs, such as disconnecting the battery negative terminal and the moving of the cooling system expansion tank. Remove the screws/bolts securing the wiring connectors to the fusible link on the battery positive terminal, pull the engine management ECU wiring harness off the holder, and pull the fuse holder out of the mounting bracket. Push the wiring harness retaining clips in and then take out the fuse holder bracket, and shift the coolant hose and the heater thermostat aside. Next, retract the black rubber cover; now, loosen and release the two nuts that hold , disconnect the main battery cable and small solenoid wiring as well, in addition, the starter motor bolts that hold the starter motor shall be loosened to allow the removal of the starter motor. For diesel engines, remove the then negative battery terminal, drain out the cooling system, and remove the radiator bottom hose from the oil cooler/filter housing. Remove the oil level sensor wiring connector, remove the bolt that hold the housing of wiring harness bracket to the transmission housing and shift the bracket and wiring harness aside. Ree moving the rubber for back, loosen and take out two nuts for retaining, disconnected the switches of the main battery and small solenoid switches and then the bolts fixed on the starter motor for taking it off. Refitting entails the reversing of the removal procedures with a specific focus on refitting of the inlet manifold where the extraction was affecting it and refilling of the cooling system on completion.
