- Q: How to address the issue if the axle shaft does not move smoothly over the entire range after assembly on 1985 Nissan 300ZX?A: A press is necessary in the removal of the spider gear assembly from the shaft. First, when making the turn, use the proverbial monkey wrench to take out the axle shaft; you will then be ready to position the axle shaft assembly in a vise. Remove about 5mm of that portion of the boot assembly that is near the joint housing using a hacksaw; while doing this, make sure that the shaft is inserted into the housing sub-assembly to avoid damaging the spider gear assembly. Peel the boot assembly slowly away from the axle and trim the remaining part off of the axle assembly. Scribe a line across the face of the shaft and spider gear assembly. Insert the shaft into a proper press and press the spider assembly off it without dismantling it. Clean and examine the bearing assembly, the joint housing and the housing sub-assembly for the signs of wear and tear normally replace these parts when necessary. Place the shaft between two wooden blocks and fix it in a vise; align the assembly's markings with the intended position; then proceed to screw the spider onto the shaft. To stake the serration portion, mark three locations that are equally spaced on the assembly and ensure that none of them are staked before, then stake two or three teeth at every position. Place the boot assembly back in screw, fold back the boot band and try to crimp down the retaining dogs, after packing the boot with the required amount and type of grease. Adjust the boot length as follows; ensure that the shaft is straight in regards to the joint assembly now clamp the boot band at the mentioned length. Fit the shaft carrier side with housing ring and the housing sub-assembly as a single assembly or unit. Compress the housing ring narrowly around the circumference and simultaneously make two positions at 180 degrees with a board shielding the housing cover. Mount a new boot band, new boot assembly into destination housing on the axle shaft added the spider assembly, then filled the boot with grease. Place the boot assembly in such a way that the flange would be held in the vise then the housing sub-assembly is to be inserted into boot assembly and the edge of the housing sub-assembly is to be bent and while bending a board should be placed on it so that the housing sub-assembly would not be damaged. It is also important to apply sealant to the perimeter of the hold down joint assemblies and then to reinstall the boot length by positioning the shaft parallel to the joint assembly before crimping the boot band. After some adjusting of the shaft assembly, check to be sure that the shaft can traverse the full range of motion without any binding, and lastly put in the axle shaft.
