  Q: How to perform an overhaul on engines without replaceable camshaft bearings on Nissan 240sx?

  To overhaul engines like CA20E, VG30E and CASeries whose camshaft bearings cannot be changed,start by removing the sprocket of the camshaft and Timing Chain to ensure that number one piston is at TDC on compression stroke. Proceed to loosen (remove) bolts that secure the rocker shaft assembly but do not remove the four end bolts which hold it together as a unit. Gradually loosen all bolts a little at a time so as not to put excessive strain on the camshaft or rocker assembly. Thereafter, remove the rocker assembly and carefully push out the camshaft through front of vehicle keeping track of disassembled parts in order. When dissembling rocker unit, join again through mounting brackets, valve rockers, springs with correct identification from instructions. Then inspect the camshaft runout, end play, wear and journal clearance. Apply sealant on each saddle before putting on top part of Cylinder Head with dowel pin up for installing. Place the rocker assembly onto the head making sure it goes over the knock pin and torque down in stages moving inwards and outwards from center both sides 11-18ft.lbs. Make sure when you are installing this engine is at TDC of compression stroke for No.1 piston to prevent valve damage. At last adjust valves. For CASeries engines in 200 SX & Stanza follow these steps: disconnect negative battery cable, set no1 piston TDC of compression stroke and remove timing belt plus valve rocker cover then go ahead to loosen all rocker arm adjusting screws plus rocker shaft mounting bolts gradually remove them as an assembly keeping components arranged in order respectively (in order). After removing camshaft pulley then thrust plate carefully pry out oil seal for camshaft slide it outside cylinder head without scoring journals (do not score journals). Apply clean engine oil coat to camshaft its back into cylinder head bushing sliding thus installing it. Install a new oil seal and thrust plate, torquing the thrust plate bolt to 58-65 ft. lbs. Apply clean engine oil on rocker shafts; insert bracket bolts for spring slippage, and gradually tighten rocker shaft bolts to 13-16 ft.lbs in stages. Reinstall camshaft pulley followed by timing belt,assured that valves being adjusted and connecting battery's negative cable eventually cylinder head cover is replaced.battery is connected before installing cylinder head cover. In order to access camshaft for removal or installation, disconnect negative battery cable, drain the cooling system and take off: timing belt, collector assembly and Intake Manifold on 200SX with VG30E engine.
