  Q: How to replace a water pump in a Nissan 240sx?

  Unplug the battery's negative terminal. Empty off the coolant from both the Radiator and engine. You have to remove all serpentine belts. Undo all bolts holding together the fan assembly/water pump pulley and the water pump attaching bolts. If installed, detach the water pump with a gasket from the cylinder block. Eliminate any gasket material or sealant from the water pump mating surfaces. Take out all sealant from groove in water pump surface as well. Put a continuous bead of high temperature liquid gasket on the water pump housing mating surface. The housing must be attached to the cylinder block within 5 minutes after applying sealant. After sealing of pump housing onto block wait at least 30 minutes for sealant to cure before starting engine. Position water pump (and gasket) onto block and install attaching bolts. Small retaining bolts should be torqued to about 5 ft lbs and large retaining bolts to 12-14 ft lbs.. Install fan assembly/water pump pulley, install drive belts and adjust tension.Fill cooling system up to proper level.Bleed cooling system.Connect battery's negative terminal.In case of a 200SX VG30E Engine, take off negative battery cable, then empty off coolant from radiator and left side drain cocks on cylinder block.Remove radiator shroud.Loosen power steering compressor and Alternator drive belts.Take away fan assembly coupling.Disconnect hoses of water pump.Undo water pump pulley, next upper Timing Cover followed by lower timing cover.The clearance between timing cover hose clamp and timing belt should be enough so that you do not get coolant on timing belt while removing it.Retract out different lengths of water pump retaining bolts then remove them.Make sure that gasket sealing surfaces are clean and free of old gasket material.Put on cylinder block both water-pump along with its gasket.Torque retaining bolts EVENLY in steps to 12-15 ft lbs..Install upper and lower timing belt covers.Connect water pump hoses.Install cooling fan and coupling assembly.Assemble and tension drive belts.Then attach radiator shroud.Fill up and bleed the cooling system finally, fasten negative battery cable.
