Nissan 300ZX Ignition Switch

The Ignition Switch for the Nissan 300ZX is responsible for controlling the flow of electrical power to the many engine starting electrical devices. When you turn your key to the on position, the Ignition Switch sends battery current to these devices. The Nissan 300ZX switch, located on the steering column, functions in partnership with a lock cylinder, preventing rotation until the correct key is inserted. The Ignition Switch supplies current to the starter as well as the ignition system and fuel injection circuits in the start position. Once activated, the on position provides power to the engine and components, while the acc position allows other items, for example, the radio and windows, to work without an operating engine. Power is cut when the key is placed in the off position. The lock position allows key removal, locks the steering wheel, and on automatic models, keeps the gearshift in park. Wear and tear to the lock's key, tumbler, or internal contacts may jam and prevent you from starting your vehicle or shut off your engine in the event of an electrical discontinuity of the Ignition Switch. A maintained Nissan 300ZX Ignition Switch prevents component loss. In the Nissan 300ZX, the Ignition Switch needs to be in working condition for the vehicle to operate properly. With that in mind, every owner should replace this part when it stops working.

Nissan 300ZX Ignition Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to address the issue if the ignition switch electrical connector does not disconnect properly during the removal process on Nissan 300ZX?
    A:
Obtain two self-shear screws from your Nissan dealer, needed to reinstall the steering lock. Remove the steering wheel, then take off the top and bottom steering column covers, which are attached by two retaining screws each. Next, remove the instrument panel combination switches and the trim panel from the cluster panel by taking out the four retaining screws. The steering lock/ignition switch assembly is secured to the steering shaft with two self-shear screws that must be carefully drilled out, requiring precise drilling. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector. For installation, align the mating surface of the steering lock with the hole in the steering column tube, loosely install the two self-shear screws, and after checking the operation of the lock with the key, tighten the screws until the tops snap off. Finally, install the instrument cluster panel trim piece, the instrument panel combination switches, the top and bottom steering column trim pieces, and then the steering wheel.
