Nissan 350Z Cylinder Head

The Nissan 350Z Cylinder Head seals off the roof of each combustion chamber, directing the air fuel intake, trapping pressure, and channeling hot exhaust so the V6 can breathe well and make good power. A smooth port and tight valve configuration will minimize restrictions and optimize airflow. Likewise, lightness and strength will mean less mass and optimum heat dissipation. The more alloy it uses instead of heavy iron, the better the power to weight ratio. The early 350Z with the VQ35DE and the later updates with the VQ35HR are both made from aluminum, but the later VQ35HR incorporates beefier areas around the ports to allow for greater flow potential as well as improved cooling passages. This is the major difference between the two styles. In the event of the Cylinder Head warping or cracking, worn guides or burnt valves can cause misfires, leaks of coolant or oil, and sometimes a dead cylinder. To achieve the continued clamping of the Cylinder Head, Nissan specifies single-use torque to yield head bolts that stretch in a predetermined fashion to create even pressure to seal the gasket. The 350Z is cherished by enthusiasts for its entertaining revs, and making sure its Cylinder Head remains trouble free makes Nissan performance both durable and thrilling. Additionally, the Cylinder Head plays a crucial role in the overall performance of the engine.

Nissan 350Z Cylinder Head Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install a Cylinder Head, and what precautions should be taken to ensure the mating surfaces are properly prepared and the head gasket is correctly positioned during the process on Nissan 350Z?
    A:
For instance, to gain access to the back of the Timing Chain cover one has to pull off the upper Oil Pan from the engine; this in turn calls for hoisting the engine which is placed on supports from the underside by a transmission jack dropping the Engine Mounts from the frame. After pulling the front suspension crossmember off, lower the engine back to the original position. Start by pulling off the timing chain(s) and sprockets with an intention of not touching the crankshaft from TDC of the compression stroke in cylinder No.1. After that, it is necessary to undo the bolts of the rear timing chain cover in the sequence contrary to the tightening sequence and then to separate the cover from the engine: if the cover is tightly fixed it is possible to use a block of wood and a hammer, or a flexible putt knife to divide the gasket seal but not to damage the sealing surfaces. Proceed to next steps of the removal, and eliminate the intake and exhaust manifolds, camshafts and the lifters; all the other parts must be removed and disconnected from the cylinder head, if they still remain. Rotate the cylinder head bolts a ¼ turn counter to the tightening pattern; you can then raise the cylinder head off the engine block gently with a slight pry bar if needed. Before assembling the cylinder head and block it is important to make sure that the mating surfaces are clean using gasket scraper and cleaning with, lacquer thinner or acetone. Inspect the area on the cylinder heads where the bolts are to mate for any damage, flank the threads of the head bolt holes and measure the stretch in each cylinder head bolt and replace those that have turned out to be stretched. Check the condition of the face of the head gasket and fit all the removed parts back, placing the new cylinder head gasket atop the dowel pins in the block. Remove the head from the block without moving the gasket, lubricate the threads and the bottom of the bolts and make the screws fit in the former positions before fixing them tightly in a gradual manner with a specific force. Gently remove any debris and dirt from the rear timing chain cover and bolts, and apply clean RTV sealant on all the sealing surfaces in the rear timing chain cover, place new O-rings and fit the rear timing cover before closing the nuts and bolts in a correct manner to the exact torque recommended. Lastly, fit in the camshafts, replace the coolant, change the engine oil, replace the oil filter, and crank the engine to check you for oil and coolant leaks.
