The steps which have to be followed in order to remove and refit the fuel pump and Fuel Level Sensor on a Type 2 engine are as follows; First turn the fuel tank filler cap anti-clockwise to release any pressure that may be remaining in the fuel pipes as well as turn off the battery. To get to the Fuel Level Sensor, remove the rear seat and flip the three clips of the access cover in a horizontal position to remove it. Before conducting any operations on the Fuel Level Sensor, it is necessary to eliminate any contamination around it, especially dust and dirt. Pull the connector's wiring off the Fuel Level Sensor, and release the colored tabs of the quick-release fittings on both sides to remove the fuel hoses; these ends should then be shielded from dust. Tilt the locking ring from the top of the fuel tank and lift out the pump/Fuel Level Sensor being careful not to damage the sensor or fuel leak. If the fuel tank did not come with a built-in retaining clip, then this element has to be removed and discarded, because the new sealing ring will have to be inserted. Before refitting, the new sealing ring should be fitted to the top of the tank; the fuel pump should be inserted and the tab on the pump should then engage with the cut-out on the tank or the lines should then be aligned, if there are no tabs. The pump has to remain pressed down onto the sealing ring until the locking ring can be fitted and adequately tightened, with the arrow mark online facing towards the rear of the vehicle. Last, join the fuel hose and wiring connector back to the Fuel Level Sensor, join the battery terminals and check with fuel leakage after the engine is started.
