To remove the steering wheel, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery and set the wheels in the straight ahead position. Next, remove the airbag module by prying off the cover from each side of the steering wheel, then using a screwdriver or punch to dislodge the retaining clips and detach the two airbag connectors. Lock the steering wheel in the straight ahead position and remove the nut, noting the alignment marks on the wheel and shaft; if absent, create your own. Disconnect the electrical connector and release the harness holders before removing the steering wheel from the shaft. If necessary to remove the airbag spiral cable, take off the steering column covers, remove the wiper/washer switch and the turn signal switch, then release the tab at the top to remove the spiral cable. Caution is advised against hammering on the steering wheel or shaft. For installation, ensure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead. If the spiral cable has been removed or its center position lost, turn it clockwise until it becomes hard to turn, then rotate it about 2-1/2 turns counterclockwise until the marks align and the location pin is at the 12 o'clock position. Feed the airbag spiral cable harness through the hub in the steering wheel, then slip the wheel onto the shaft, ensuring the marks are aligned and the spiral cable pin is engaged. Install the steering wheel retaining nut and tighten it to the specified torque. Reconnect the electrical connectors and install the airbag module, ensuring the retaining clips fully engage, then install the covers. Finally, reconnect the battery and perform the necessary re-learn procedures. With your body out of the path of the airbag, verify the airbag circuit is operational by turning the ignition key to the On or Start position; the "AIR BAG" warning light should illuminate for a few seconds and then turn off.
