Rotate the crankshaft by hand to check for binding.

Carefully pry out the old seal with a seal removal tool or screwdriver.

The remaining steps are the reverse of removal.

A large socket, section of pipe, or a blunt tool can be used to carefully drive the new seal into position.

Use a seal driver or a large socket and hammer to drive the new seal into the bore until it is completely seated. Ensure that the new seal is pressed in place until it bottoms against the cover flange. Select a socket with the same outside diameter as the seal.

The remaining steps involve reversing the removal process.

Remove the timing belt covers and timing belt, then carefully remove the crankshaft sprocket with a prybar or two screwdrivers, taking care not to damage the oil pump body.

A replacement of the crankshaft is necessary.

The seal lips must be lubricated with clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease before the seal/retainer is slipped over the crankshaft.

If the crankshaft is damaged, the new seal will leak.

Before installation, apply a thin coat of multi-purpose grease to the inside of the seal. Fabricate a seal installation tool with a short length of pipe of equal or slightly smaller outside diameter than the seal itself. File the end of the pipe that will bear down on the seal until it's free of sharp edges. You'll also need a long bolt of the same thread pitch as the crankshaft pulley bolt and a large washer, slightly larger in diameter than the pipe, on which the bolt head can seat.
