For manual transmission vehicles, set the parking brake and place the transmission in neutral; for automatic models, place it in Park.

After the valve job has been performed, the cylinder head will be in like-new condition. Before installation on the engine, it is important to clean the cylinder head again to remove any metal particles and abrasive grit that may still be present from the valve service or cylinder head resurfacing operations. Using compressed air, if available, is recommended to blow out all the oil holes and passages.

Use the formula N = T + A - V, where N is the thickness of the new lifter, T is the thickness of the old lifter, A is the valve clearance measured, and V is the desired valve clearance.

The machine shop will remove the valves and springs, recondition or replace the valves and valve seats, recondition or replace the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers, and valve stem keepers (as necessary), replace the valve seals with new ones, reassemble the valve components, and ensure the installed spring height is correct. The cylinder head gasket surface will also be resurfaced if it's warped.
