Before a cylinder head can be removed the fuel system pressure must be relieved and the positive terminal of the battery disconnected alongside unfolding the engine in the TDC compression for cylinder number one. Pull the coolant; take out the
Timing Chain as well as the camshafts, the
Exhaust Manifold and the
Intake Manifold. All related articles that are connected to the cylinder head should also be labeled and disconnected if any such include coolant fittings, tubes, cables, hoses or wiring harnesses. To remove the cylinder head bolts, slide in a breaker bar along with the hex bit of the suitable size and turn the bolts on each in quarter turn until they can be unscrewed manually; and it is crucial to loosen them in the progressive sequence in an opposite order to that adopted when tightening to prevent the cylinder head warping or cracking. Raise the cylinder head with the use of a mechanic lift over the engine block and pry it loose if tight and detach all external parts for cleaning. For installation, the surface of the cylinder head should be free from any contaminants cleaning it with the gasket scraper while using lacquer thinner or acetone on areas where are is grease. Spin for nicks or damage on the mating surfaces, and, where required, service with a good file or machine. Use a choard and a tap to chase the threads of the cylinder head bolt holes and blow off the dirt using compressed air. Inspection of the cylinder head for dimensional accuracy also; also the installation of any parts that might have been removed. Place the new cylinder head gasket in the block line with the dowel pins and then put the cylinder head onto the block gently. All the new cylinder head bolts threads and the hardened washers should be lubed with clean engine oil downstream, before they are put into place and tightened with the right sequence to the recommended torque. Place the lifters and the camshafts and bolt in the timing chain to mark the timing and check both the valve clearances. The rest of the removal process happens in the opposite order of the installation. Replace the coolant, replace the oil filter, check the oil level, reconnect batteries, and perform all of the relearn steps.
