To remove and install the steering gear assembly, first raise and support the car on jackstands. Use the Ball Joint Remover tool HT72520000 or an equivalent to detach the
Tie Rod End from the
Steering Knuckle. Loosen the steering gear mounting bolts without removing them, then match mark and remove the steering column lower joint. Unbolt and take out the steering gear assembly. For installation, position the steering gear assembly back onto the vehicle and torque the tie rod-to-steering knuckle nut according to specifications, which are 40-72 ft. lbs. for the 200SX model and 22-29 ft. lbs. for all Stanza models. Torque the steering gear-to-frame clamp bolts evenly in steps to 43-58 ft. lbs. for Stanza and 33-44 ft. lbs. for 200SX, and torque the lower joint-to-steering gear bolt to 23-31 ft. lbs. for all models. Ensure that the wheels are aligned straight and the steering joint slot is aligned with the steering gear cap or spacer mark when installing the lower steering joint. Check the front end alignment if necessary. For overhaul, it is advisable to have the manual steering gear serviced by qualified rebuilders, as the cost of specific components may not be as economical as purchasing a rebuilt unit.
